I read The Haunting of Hill House next, and then The Birdâs Nest and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and some years later Hangsaman and The Sundial, along with her short fiction. Iâve reread her work over the decades, continually amazed by Jacksonâs ability to unsettle, provoke and elicit sympathy for characters who are often unabashedly unpleasant, in prose spare and sharp as a boning knife. The group fears Eleanorâs presence in the house while also fearing for her safety. They urge her to leave the house, but she doesnât want to; with her mother dead, she has no one to go to and no other home.
